January
I spent all of January completely wrapped up in in the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas and I can honestly say that it was one of the best series that I’ve read. For those who haven’t heard of or read the series here’s a spoil free summary of the first book along with my thoughts and ratings.
“After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of
Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged
before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition:
she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.
Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for four years and then be granted her freedom.
Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for four years and then be granted her freedom.
Then one of the other contestants turns up dead ... quickly
followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she
becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to
discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.”
One of Maas’s most admirable traits as an author is her
ability to plan a plot. Not just the beginning, middle and end of a single
novel but the series of actions that must happen in order to get from page one
of the first book to the ‘The End’ in the last. Each book in this series is so
different but they each fit together in the most perfect way. The only other
series that I’ve read and been similarly effected is with Harry Potter. Maas’s has created a world that is real and dynamic, each character coming equipped
with their own set of strengths and weaknesses making them incredibly loveable and
tangible.

I honestly can’t recommend this series enough. You get a taste of everything: danger, romance, fantasy, action, betrayal; and my favorite theme: redemption. The only
fault I’ve found is the first two in the series were bit slow compared to the
others. If I had to pick my favorite out of them it would be Heir of Fire which
is where I absolutely fell in love with Celaena and her entire story.
Here's my ratings:
Throne of Glass: 4/5
Crown of Midnight: 3.5/5
Heir of Fire: 5/5
Queen of Shadows: 5/5
Empire of Storms: 5/5

These are the books I have on my shelf for the next month. I may get to all of them, some of them or even others not listed so be sure to check out my Goodreads to see how I'm coming along!
