The show that was perhaps the most eagerly anticipated for
this month’s New York Fashion week was of course the Michael Kors show. For me,
this show was a huge statement tool for what direction the brand was going
to be going towards in the upcoming season.
It’s no secret that MK receives a lot of backlash because of
their tendency to copy other high end brands and aesthetics in their lines.
Even more recently, the brand has fallen into this trap and because of that
most seasoned luxury buyers have steered away from the brand.
Before seeing the show, I was hoping more than anything that they
could create a new look and establish themselves as a brand. After looking at
all the ensembles (and leaving the handbag silhouettes aside), I think it’s save to say that they achieved this.
The main aspect that MK clung onto in order to
make the brand their own is their use of muted and metallic color schemes. This
helped create a theme that was easy to follow and helped fit all the different
looks together in a seamless way. I also enjoyed how lighter colors were pulled
in these looks. The season that’s being mapped out right now is Fall and
Winter, obviously these are the seasons where the clothes get darker to reflect
the outside world. Michael Kors stemmed away from this and it was surprisingly refreshing.
Even the black and grey pieces were pulling lighter shades.
Another thing that was pleasant about this line was that the looks were extremely varied. As I was flipping through the pictures my mind immediately started to create outfits with the pieces that ranged from business casual to a relaxed day running around town.
To say I was impressed with this show would be an understatement. I believe that Micheal Kors is taking an excellent stride in creating their own brand that is different and innovative instead of trying to create the same looks as higher priced luxury brands for a cheaper cost.
I'm really looking forward to what they bring to the table in the future.
Love,
A. xx
